Oscar-nominated Paul Mescal admits he gets 'mad' over speculation about his relationship status

Oscar-nominated actor Paul Mescal has said he gets “really mad and upset” over “Twitter fodder” talking about his relationship status with Phoebe Bridgers.

The Aftersun actor – who is up for Best Actor at this year’s Academy Awards - broke his silence on speculation that he and the singer, 28, ended their reported engagement, telling Vanity Fair in an interview published Tuesday that he doesn’t think it’s “wise” to set the record straight.

The Normal People star said: “I definitely feel the temptation to say the status of my whatever — that will always be there.

“The temptation still exists to be like, ‘Shut the f–k up. This is my life. This is what’s going on. Or this is what’s not going on.

“Giving strangers an answer … doesn’t actually help,” he said.

“It’s, like, a quick boost of serotonin, being like, ‘I’ve said what I need to say.’ And then it’s just Twitter fodder.”

The 27-year-old said he wants to keep his life “private … moving forward,” saying he aims to “drown out” gossip.

“A lot of the time people are kind about their support for me,” he said. “That’s my predominant experience.”

The pair have not directly addressed speculation, but Phoebe spoke about getting over “heartbreak” on a “Chicken Shop Date” episode in December 2022.

Next month, Mescal will walk the red carpet at the Oscars.

He told BBC Radio 4 last week how the awards ceremony provided some respite for his family as his mother Dearbhla is undergoing cancer treatment.

"I don’t think anybody or even I was expecting this," Mescal told host Martha Kearney.

“I always knew I was willing to work hard, from the time of graduating from drama school to now hasn’t been an awfully long time. But last Tuesday, when the nominations came in and BAFTA the week before… something felt slightly absurd about it all.

"There is stuff going on at home that is difficult."

He said the nomination "has given my family are very welcome respite and [that’s] something that I never thought that my job, as something that I love very dearly, could do."

Mescal revealed that all of his family will be flying out to Los Angeles for the 95th Academy Awards.
