Oscar-nominated director John Singleton in intensive care after stroke

Oscar-nominated director John Singleton has been hospitalised in intensive care after suffering a stroke.

The man behind movies Boyz n The Hood, Shaft and 2 Fast 2 Furious fell ill on Wednesday, his family have said.

The filmmaker's loved ones said in a statement that the 51-year-old is "under great medical care".

They said: "On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care

"We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues."

It had been reported this morning that John was in hospital, although his condition was unknown.

TMZ reports that John had checked himself into a medical center after suffering weakness in his leg.

A family member told the site he had recently flown back from Costa Rica, and that the flight may have triggered his health issues.

Sources say the stroke was "mild".

Best wishes have been pouring in from John's celebrity friends.

Rapper Snoop Dogg shared a picture of them together and said: "Pray 4 my brother".

Actor Omar Epps said: "Prays up for @johnsingleton. Pull thru brother! The world needs your voice and vision. Prayers up for your family as well."

John, who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is also known for writing and directing Poetic Justice, High Learning and Baby Boy.

He is divorced and has four adult children.
