Osaze Urhoghide and his curious Celtic case as January transfer decision will offer clue to missing star's future

He was next to arrive after Ange Postecoglou, but subsequent sightings of Osaze Urhoghide have been few and far between.

A July signing from Sheffield Wednesday, the defender was officially the first capture of the club's new era.

Urhoghide signed a four-year deal and the manager revealed at the player's unveiling that he'd been on Celtic's radar for some time.

While it was a case of the club making good on acquiring a long-term target, it came with the inevitable comment that he was not really a Postecoglou signing.

That won't be entirely true, however, as it seems there's little chance the signing would have been signed off if the manager did not want him, regardless of how far down the line it was.

At just 21, he remains very young in centre-back terms but age hasn't stopped Stephen Welsh, Dane Murray and Adam Montgomery all featuring.

Indeed, the 18-year-old Murray played at centre-back in Celtic's two-legged Champions League qualifying defeat to Midtjylland.

Urhoghide, by contrast, has been conspicuous by his absence.

In those bare bones early days of Postecoglou's reign, he really didn't get a look in.

And given can play at both right-back and left-back - as well as his preferred centre-back - yet still didn't fill in at any point, now looks a rather obvious indicator of how he's currently viewed.

A report in The Scottish Sun claims both Urhoghide and Liam Shaw are currently assessed as being below first-team standard.

Urhoghide has made the bench for all of Celtic's European fixtures, where clubs are permitted to name an increased number of substitutes.

Domestically, however, where they are allowed to put only seven players on the bench, he has been in the squad just three times.

He was last named in the matchday 18 for the home win over Ross County on September 11.

In hindsight, it could be concluded Urhoghide was only included for lack of other options and, as squad depth has improved, has been pushed further down the pecking order.

His only football has been for Celtic's B team.

A spell in the reserves may be best for his development at the moment, but he wasn't billed as a reserve signing when he arrived.

Amid the report that he is already "fighting for his future", his next move remains unclear.

With the return of Christopher Jullien drawing ever closer, Urhoghide's path to the first-team will get harder to traverse before it ever gets easier.

That opens up the prospect of the Dutchman perhaps going on-loan.

Having made 21 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday's first-team in the Championship, playing Lowland League football with the B team would be a considerable step back.

And the chances of a first-team opportunity seem distant as things stand, with Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers well established as Postecoglou's first choice pairing.

A loan at this stage would not necessarily be an admission of a failed signing, just that this particular acquisition wasn't quite ready for the step up.

There's certainly a gulf in expectation between Celtic and Wednesday and Urhoghide won't be the first player who did not immediately adjust to the demands.

That's arguably why a loan makes sense.

Regular football at a good level will not only keep the player's development on track, but allow Postecoglou to judge whether he's going to make the grade.

If the manager has already made up his mind, though, then Urhoghide could find himself on the way out Celtic Park as early as January.

Either way, it's a month that will make clearer what Celtic's intentions are for the player.
