The face of Osama bin Laden was spotted in the front row of cardboard Leeds United fans at Elland Road.
Seats at the stadium have been filled with the cutouts created by fans who are unable to attend matches because of coronavirus restrictions, reports LeedsLive.
But one face that was recognisable for all of the wrong reasons has appeared in a photo uploaded from the venue. A cutout of terrorist Osama bin Laden - founder and leader of the pan-Islamic militant organisation al-Qaeda - was placed in the front row.
The picture was swiftly removed by the club but not before it was copied and shared on social media to the bemusement of many Twitter users. The club says it will ensure "offensive" images will not make an appearance in the future.
The picture has since gone viral, attracting the attention of the likes of comedian, presenter and football fan David Baddiel, who put: "What's amazing about this is that someone at Leeds is educated enough to realise that even a fake crowd should not be entirely white, but not educated enough to know who Osama Bin Laden is."
Also to point out the absurdity was football broadcaster Elliott Hackney, who put: "Tremendous effort from whoever actually paid English pounds just to have Bin Laden sit in the Leeds crowd."
A spokesman for the club said: "The process is to get them all out onto seats and then walk around, taking out the offensive ones."
He added that checks are in place to ensure there are no more offensive images in the future.
