The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition on Tuesday unveiled the logo for the 2025 Osaka Kansai World Expo.
The logo was designed by Team Inari, comprising six people led by Osaka graphic designer Tamotsu Shimada, 55. The logo includes red circles that were modeled after cells, which is a nod to the theme of the Expo, "Designing Future Society for Our Lives."
The selection committee, comprised of 11 intellects and cultural figures, first chose five final logos out of 5,894 entries. Of them, over half of the committee members chose the Team Inari logo as they said they felt it exemplifies the playful side of Osaka.
"There's an energy to it, and it has hope," said the chair of the committee and architect Tadao Ando.
Shimada said he had been inspired by Taro Okamoto's "Tower of the Sun" artwork, which was created for the last time Osaka hosted the World Expo in 1970.
"I strove to express the DNA of that time," Shimada said at a press conference.
