Osaka triumphs at U.S. Open

NEW YORK -- Naomi Osaka won the women's singles title at the U.S. Open in New York on Saturday, becoming the first Japanese player to secure a Grand Slam singles victory.

The 20-year-old Osaka defeated Serena Williams of the United States 6-2, 6-4 in the final.

Before Osaka, the furthest a Japanese player had advanced in the singles of a Grand Slam event was Kei Nishikori, 28, who lost the men's singles final at the 2014 U.S. Open.

Osaka was born in the city of Osaka. Her father is from Haiti and her mother is Japanese.
