Osaka mother accused of making infant son drink blood

A 23-year-old woman in Suminoe Ward, Osaka, has been arrested for allegedly making her newborn son drink someone else's blood, causing him to vomit, according to police.

The boy's life is not in danger, and a child consultation center has taken charge of him, the Osaka Prefectural Police said. He reportedly vomited blood more than 20 times over a two-month period. Police are investigating the details of the case.

According to police, the mother is suspected of putting someone's blood in her newborn's mouth on two occasions, once in mid-February and then in early March, when he was hospitalized at a facility in Osaka.

He had previously been hospitalized about 10 days after his birth due to a fever. Several infants were receiving intensive care in the same room at that time, and the boy's condition worsened when the nurse was not watching him. The nurse was told by the boy's mother, a part-time worker, that "my son vomited blood."

However, the hospital found nothing wrong other than the vomiting, and contacted the police in March.

The mother has denied the charges.
