Orpington fire: Man, 45, dies after house blaze which left wife dead

A man has died after a house fire which left his wife dead and two children in hospital in south east London.

Ranjana Gurung, 45, was pronounced dead after her body was found inside a property in Orpington on May 28.

Her husband Him, also 45, was taken to hospital and died on Sunday.

Mrs Gurung's teenage son Alan had to jump from his bedroom window after the fire took hold in the family home at roughly 11pm.

Schoolgirl Angel, 11, and Alan, 17, were injured in the blaze and taken to hospital but their condition was not considered life threatening.

They have since been discharged.

Mrs Gurung, who is Nepalese, worked at a local hospital as a cleaner.

Her grieving sister Yam, 42, previously spoke of her anguish over the tragedy.

The mother-of-two went to the scene and said: “I felt like something bad was happening when I got home.

“I was planning on phoning Ranjana this morning to speak to her.

“I can’t express how sad I am.

“She was a very caring mother, very nice and very helpful. We were close.

“It’s incredibly painful to lose her.

“I saw her two weeks ago, before I left for Hong Kong. She seemed fine and happy.”

Yam, who lives in Orpington, said Ranjana and husband Him had lived in the UK together for around 18 years.
