Ormeau Road: Galgorm reveals fresh plans for new Belfast hotel and restaurant

The site of a former Catholic Church in South Belfast could soon reopen as a boutique hotel after Belfast City Council officials received plans from its owners.

Hospitality group The Galgorm Collection is behind the bid and has submitted fresh plans for a new 18 bedroom hotel and licensed restaurant on the Ormeau Road to Belfast City Council.

It received planning permission from Belfast City Council’s Planning Committee for a similar £8million scheme in April 2019.

At the time, Galgorm said the proposal would create around 100 new jobs.

The plans for Belfast’s newest hospitality venue will regenerate the former derelict Holy Rosary Church and an adjacent Parochial House building at 348-350 Ormeau Road.

The 19th century grade B1 listed building has lain derelict for over 40 years since its closure in 1980.

Under the plans submitted to the council last week, the works would involve the demolition of two storey rear return, external steps and single storey out buildings of former the Parochial House and the demolition of an existing vestry entrance porch, external steps, single storey boiler house and part of internal wall to tower and relocation of internal spiral staircase of the former Holy Rosary Church.

It also involves the erection of three storey and single storey rear and twp storey side extensions and associated works and the change of use to an 18 bed hotel and licensed restaurant.

Earlier this year, the Galgorm Collection opened Northern Ireland's latest luxury boutique hotel complete with stunning spa retreat.

The 33-bedroom boutique hotel and spa - The Rabbit Hotel & Retreat – opened on 18 June and followed the purchase and dramatic transformation of the former Templeton Hotel in Templepatrick.

The Galgorm has been approached for comment.
