Ormeau Park gate re-opened after residents' outcry

A gate allowing access through Ormeau Park has been re-opened after complaints from residents.

The gate is one of the entrances to the park and gives residents access to a path from the Ravenhill Road through Ormeau Golf Club and to the park.

While the rest of the gates had been opened around the park, the gate had been the only one to remain closed.

At the time, Belfast City Council said the reason for the gate being closed was to ensure Ormeau Golf Club was able to open while maintaining social distancing measures.

Councillor Seamas De Faoite had previously fought for the gate to be re-opened to allow both residents and commuters access to the path through the park.

"It's putting off people who are trying to avoid contact with others and who are trying to social distance themselves," said the SDLP councillor for Lisnasharragh at the time.

However, nearly two weeks later the gate has been re-opened.

The councillor shared the news in a tweet on social media.

He said: "The Ormeau Park gate and path through Ormeau Golf Club will re-open from this afternoon! (June 17th)

"Big thank you to everyone who got in touch - this is an important right of way and we will always defend it."
