BALTIMORE _ As expected, the Orioles placed infielder Tim Beckham on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday because of a left groin strain suffered while running the bases Monday night. The move was made retroactive to Tuesday.
The team added infielder Jace Peterson to the 25-man roster after claiming him off waivers from the New York Yankees on Tuesday and he's in Wednesday's lineup.
Peterson, 27, didn't arrive in Baltimore until Tuesday evening, so the rainout allowed the team to make the moves seamlessly before Wednesday's game.
Beckham suffered the groin injury while running to first during an eighth-inning single in the Orioles' series-finale loss to the Cleveland Indians. He had an MRI on Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury.
Beckham initially injured the groin in the fourth-last spring game and remained in Sarasota, Fla., to play in minor-league camp to ensure he was ready for Opening Day.
With Beckham out and second baseman Jonathan Schoop already on the DL with a right oblique strain, the Orioles are without two of their top infielders.
After the injury to Schoop, Beckham shifted from third base to second, and now Peterson _ who was designated for assignment by the Yankees after going 3-for-10 in limited playing time _ would likely immediately step in and start at second base for the Orioles.
