BALTIMORE _ Orioles reliever Darren O'Day saw a specialist in Nashville on Friday for a second opinion on his strained left hamstring, and was deciding whether to undergo surgery to repair it.
"We knew it was a pretty extensive injury, and even without surgery, it would probably be a potential 60-day (disabled list)," manager Buck Showalter said. "I think that's one of the ways that we're making room for these guys today. But Darren is contemplating surgery now. He'll make the decision if, when and where here shortly. (Head athletic trainer Brian Ebel) just talked to him. He just got through seeing the doctor there, and Brian is speaking to the doctor."
O'Day's assignment to the 60-day disabled list effectively eliminates him from trade consideration, as he wouldn't be able to help a contending club until the end of August at the earliest. Showalter said if he did have surgery, O'Day would then be able to address whether the right-hander's season was over or not.
"I think that's probably the case, but I wouldn't go there yet," Showalter said.
If O'Day is lost for the year, it would be the second Orioles reliever to suffer a season-ending injury this month after Richard Bleier's lat tear that required surgery earlier in June.
