Orioles change plans after Miley's exit, top White Sox, 4-2

BALTIMORE _ Jose Abreu's line drive hit the left wrist of Orioles left-hander Wade Miley in the first inning Friday night at Camden Yards.

Orioles staff went out to check on Miley and determined to allow him to stay in the game. Two pitches later, Avisail Garcia knocked another hit into Miley's backside _ and knocked Miley from the game.

The Orioles sent right-hander Gabriel Ynoa into unplanned long relief in place of Miley, who had suffered a left wrist contusion, and Ynoa responded by pitching six shutout innings in a 4-2 Sox loss. The Sox left 10 runners on base against four Orioles relievers.

The Sox's best chance to pull ahead came in the eighth against Orioles right-hander Darren O'Day. Melky Cabrera walked and Abreu singled to put runners on first and third, and Garcia's RBI groundout allowed the first run to score.

But pinch-hitter Yolmer Sanchez struck out, and after the Orioles intentionally walked Cody Asche, Willy Garcia grounded out to end the threat.

The Sox added a run in the ninth when Cabrera grounded into a force out at second with a runner on third but couldn't even the score.

Sox right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, starting against the team for which he played for four seasons, received a couple of tips of the cap from his former fan base as he exited after 62/3 innings.

He allowed two earned runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts in his first game at Camden Yards since the Orioles released him before the 2016 season. Gonzalez went 39-33 with a 3.82 ERA over four seasons with the Orioles and had a 3.94 ERA at Camden Yards. But he latched on with the Sox shortly after they parted ways.

Gonzalez hit a batter with the bases loaded to send in a run in the first. Seth Smith singled on Tim Anderson's botched play in a shift, Chris Davis walked and Mark Trumbo singled to load the bases. Gonzalez then hit Jonathan Schoop for the Orioles' first run.

Davis added a third-inning solo shot to center field to push the Orioles lead to 2-0.

Joey Rickard doubled to left field off Sox reliever Michael Ynoa in the eighth to drive in a run, and the Orioles scored another on Anderson's fielding error.
