Orioles add Mike Wright, place Dylan Bundy on bereavement list

BOSTON _ Right-hander Mike Wright joined the Orioles for Friday's series opener in Boston after having his scheduled minor league start Thursday called off at the last minute. He is replacing Dylan Bundy, who was placed on bereavement leave.

Wright was with the major league club in June before going on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. His most recent minor league outing was his longest, as he allowed five earned runs in 62/3 innings on Aug. 18.

"I worked up to 100 pitches," Wright said. "I still felt strong in that last inning. I did get a little tired, but the velo was still good, the stuff was still pretty good. Now, I've had six days rest. This is my seventh day. Hopefully, we're right back where we need to be."

He has a 4.03 ERA for Triple-A Norfolk, while he's allowed seven runs in 111/3 innings of major league work, all in relief.

Wright said the move to relief may have exacerbated his shoulder issue earlier this year, but he doesn't believe it will again.

"I won't say it's more my speed," Wright said. "I've done both. I've been a reliever in college, and I loved, it, but it's been since 2010 since I was that constant reliever. It was kind of just a shock to the body, but hopefully now that I've done it once this year, my body will be used to it and I can go from there."

Bundy started Wednesday after a lengthy period of prescribed rest, waiting 10 days between starts against the Oakland Athletics and allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings in each.

With a no-decision Wednesday, Bundy is 12-8 with a 4.18 ERA in 24 starts this season, with a team-high 17 quality starts.
