Originals Festival in south London halted as fans injured by crowd crush

The Originals Festival took place at Crystal Palace Bowl - (Christopher Hope Fitch)

A south London festival reportedly had to close early after several fans were injured during a crush.

Police officers were forced to cordon off sections of Crystal Palace Park to help people leaving The Originals Festival on Sunday.

One festival goer described being “trampled on” and left traumatised after she was trapped under the crowd for several minutes.

Taking to social media following the incident, she explained her face and chest were stamped on after a group had decided to ram the festival’s entrance and did not care about who was in front of them.

The mother, who explained she was attending her first festival, said: “I got crushed, physically crushed, physically stamped on.

“It was not just me. I went with my sister and her two friends. My sister’s friend got crushed and trampled on to the point where she got her ribs stepped on.”

She continued: “I felt people’s feet stepping and jumping, and running all over my body. I was screaming for help. People were clambering and dropping all over me.

“There were like hundreds of people rushing through at one time and I [was] getting crushed by every single person.”

Fighting back tears, the festival goer added that she feared for her life and had screamed so much that the breath in her chest was gone, leaving her gasping for air.

She added: “Someone could have crushed my ribs, anything could have happened to me and I was just thinking ‘who is going to look after my son? I have got to get back to my son’.”

Paramedics are understood to have treated two people at the scene for minor injuries.

The Met Police told the Standard officers assisted the event organisers at the party at Crystal Palace Bowl on Sunday.

The force explained no arrests were made.

A number of festivals have already safely taken place at Crystal Palace Bowl this summer, including the Big Smoke Festival, curated by

The Basement Jaxx and Nile Rodgers & Chic are due to play at the venue over the bank holiday weekend.

Affectionately known as the Rusty Laptop, due to its copper slanted stage, Crystal Palace Bowl has a long history of holding gigs and performances.

Bob Marley famously played his largest-ever UK gig there in 1980 at the last ever Garden Party event.

The Orginals Festival has been contacted for comment.
