Original owner of 'beast' dog that killed child speaks to police

The dog that is reported to have killed a 10-year-old boy was described as a 'beast' by its previous owner.

Jack Lis died after being attacked at a house in Caerphilly, Wales, as neighbours reportedly tried to control the dog, shortly after 4pm on Monday, November 8.

The eight stone pitbull that carried out the attack was shot by police at the scene.

It has been sold to the family of Jack's friend by a breeder Lee Jenkins, who told the Mirro r he has voluntarily spoken to police.

Last month he had posted a photo of a dog on a Facebook breeders’ forum with the caption: "Beast 15 months, 115lbs, 24 ttw [inches to the withers]."

In another post, he wrote: "Looking to re-home my boy, he’s 15 months old, great with people but unfortunately he does not like other dogs at all.

"I’ve tried my best with him, I have other dogs and cannot put them at risk, he needs someone with time."

It has since been reported that the dog had attacked a cat and an adult, and lunged at child since being re-homed in Caerphilly.

Lee Jenkins said: "I am not the owner of that dog. I told the police everything I know.

"They know I have nothing to do with it. It’s not my dog and it’s since been re-homed from me."

On Wednesday, Gwent Police said a 28-year-old woman, from the Caerphilly area was arrested, on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death. She was later released on conditional bail.

Two men – a 34-year-old from the Mountain Ash area and a 19-year-old from the Caerphilly area – attended voluntarily in relation to an offence of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death. Both were later released.

Neighbours described “huge muscles” protruding from the dog’s shoulders as they saw it moments after Jack’s death.

A dog legislation expert is examining its features to see if it is a breed allowed in the UK. Tests could be carried out to check its DNA and its owners and breeders questioned by officers.

Neighbours described it as an “American bulldog or a pitbull” but it may be a cross-breed with the banned pitbull terrier.

Chief Supt Mark Hobrough, of Gwent Police, said: "We are looking at all potential offences and all potential actions that need to come as a result of this investigation.

"Gwent Police will deal very firmly with any people who commit an absolute offence of possession of a dangerous dog breed prohibited in the UK."

Police were called to the house shortly before 4pm on Monday to reports of a child 'trapped in a house and being attacked by a dog.' Officers distracted the animal and moved Jack out of the house as soon as possible but he died at the scene.

Jack lived nearby but had stopped at his pal’s home on the way home from Cwm Ifor primary school.

The dog had previously been spotted aggressively growling at passers-by while pulling on its owner’s leads.

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, said: "There needs to be an examination of the Dangerous Dogs Act to see if the law needs to be strengthened."
