Andy Hall: "He was a tense, humourless subject, which was just as well, as i wanted to reflect that weighty, slightly intimidating persona he has - the 'God of the Godless' look (the headline of the article). That is why i chose harsher lighting and stood him on a box with the sky behind him, using a polarising filter to make the clouds more dramatic. He was also bossy and wanted to control the shoot. 'Why are you shooting me this way?' he said. "Because I want to give you gravitas, Richard.' 'I don't want fucking gravitas,' he barked, 'I want humanity!', not realising the irony in the way he talked to me.
