Founder member and spokesperson Alexandra Shevchenko talked to the Observer about the plan to launch Femen UK to highlight issues such as female genital mutilation, forced marriage and the sex industry.

There was much discussion on how the text should be written across her chest – could she black out her nipples within the text? All a bit bizarre really. Then the unveiling before the Houses of Parliament, expecting that we would be moved on or Alexandra would be arrested but a besuited man on his phone who we were sure was security was just as transfixed as the rest of the rather large crowd that gathered!'

original observer: Khalid Abdalla
Actor, videographer and activist Khalid Abdalla photographed in Cairo for a feature in the New Review.
David Degner: 'Making these portraits of Khalid Abdalla was the easiest portrait shoot I have ever had. He trusted me to shoot my own ideas. The best part is that we shot on a Friday, when downtown Cairo is completely empty, and we had the whole day. Our only deadline was the army-imposed curfew, and some police who shooed us away from Tahrir Square. Halfway through the day Khalid reminded me that we had met before, in the early morning of 9 April 2011 when the army forcefully cleared protesters out of Tahrir Square, trapping them near my apartment. He had a camera and needed the internet and refuge, so I invited him up to my apartment. Who would know we would meet again some two years later?'
