Karen Robinson: 'Hard to hide nipples when you're photographing the UK launch of a topless protest group. There was much discussion on how the text should be written across her chest – could she black out her nipples within the text? All a bit bizarre really. Then the unveiling before the Houses of Parliament, expecting that we would be moved on or Alexandra would be arrested but a besuited man on his phone who we were sure was security was just as transfixed as the rest of the rather large crowd that gathered!' David Degner: 'Making these portraits of Khalid Abdalla was the easiest portrait shoot I have ever had. He trusted me to shoot my own ideas. The best part is that we shot on a Friday, when downtown Cairo is completely empty, and we had the whole day. Our only deadline was the army-imposed curfew, and some police who shooed us away from Tahrir Square. Halfway through the day Khalid reminded me that we had met before, in the early morning of 9 April 2011 when the army forcefully cleared protesters out of Tahrir Square, trapping them near my apartment. He had a camera and needed the internet and refuge, so I invited him up to my apartment. Who would know we would meet again some two years later?' Photograph: David Degner for the Observer
