original observer: New York City
Greg Whitmore, Observer picture editor: 'The end of July saw the Observer and photographer Neil Libbert part company after many, many years of outstanding work for us. Neil's first published picture was in the Manchester Guardian in March 1958 and his first in the Observer appeared the following year. He worked for the Sunday Times in the 60s (he covered the 1966 World Cup final for them and you can see him at work behind Booby Moore here) but returned to become one of the finest the Obs has ever known.
This shot is one of my favourites, taken on 42nd Street in New York City in 1960. Not a commission for the Observer but it shows Neil doing what Neil does best. Everybody on the Observer picture desk will miss him and we wish him well

original observer: York
Heatwave in York, England.
Gary Calton: 'I had seen these young mothers and their children while walking around an estate in York. They were sunning themselves on the pavement in front of their house. There was a time when I would probably have tried to take a candid photograph. It was a lovely summer scene set in a classic terraced street. However, one of the children was naked. Times have changed; and taking a candid photograph of a naked young child for publication (where, in a digital world, i would lose all control of the use of the image; not to mention the reaction of the parents if they had objected ) is not an option. So i asked permission to take a few photographs (granted) then I asked if they would put a few clothes on the child. They then carried on with their conversation. The result was a really lovely set of images of two friends and their young children on a summer's day'
