Alex Lake: 'Charles has been writing a multi-volume biography on Margret Thatcher. We met at 1pm to take his portrait sat at her favourite table in her favourite restaurant. We were to have an hour together. When I arrived the room was full of 60 boozy diners who looked firmly rooted. I sensed that my window of time was going to narrow ... 'It's usually dead inside by 2pm on a weekday, sir. Very unusual,' I was told. We waited. Then Charles left to do some work and I waited. Then he came back and we waited some more. There was still a table of people boozing at 4.40pm. 'I have to be gone by five,' said Moore. Magically, the room suddenly cleared. My lights were thrown up and I nailed the shoot in seven minutes. We wrapped at 5pm'

It is very obvious to me that the people least responsible for the economic mess we are in are being punished the most. Gabriel Szabo: 'Usually on jobs I try to make people smile and talk. As I'm Hungarian, my accent is usually an ice-breaker – everybody's heard of Puskas or the 1956 uprising, or has an opinion on Eastern-European immigrants. This bunch did not need an ice-breaker. The sun was shining, the daffodils blooming and these guys made my day. Finally I had to ask them to stop as my laughter was shaking the camera too much. Sometimes after jobs I walk away drained. Not this time. I was re-energised for days. People like this are life affirming. My wish is to be like them when I am their age'
