England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed the potential cause of Jack Grealish's injury he sustained on international duty that forced him to withdraw ahead of the San Marino clash.
Despite featuring in training yesterday, the 26-year-old pulled out of the squad and won't travel for the final World Cup qualifier with the Three Lions needing a point to secure qualification.
Grealish replaced Phil Foden shortly after the hour mark in Friday's rout against Albania as they moved to within touching distance of next November's tournament in Qatar, but the City -man made little impact with the points already sealed after a five-goal first-half flurry.
While the extent of the injury has yet to be confirmed, Southgate did confirm that they did send him, with Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, in for a scan that revealed damage.
"With Jack, we think a little bit perhaps in the game but he trained yesterday so as a precaution we've both scanned them [and Jordan Henderson]," he said during his press conference.
"There is small injuries on the scans so we just hope they're not going to miss too much football here on. It shouldn't be too bad in either case but have to see how that progresses."
Raheem Sterling also withdrew from the squad due to personal matters which the England boss confirmed, adding: "Yeah he has a personal issue, so the first two [Jordan Henderson and Jack Grealish] are injuries."
Foden, John Stones and Kyle Walker will remain with the squad as Crystal Palace's on loan midfielder Conor Gallagher was handed his maiden England senior squad call-up.
While another international break casualty was Cole Palmer who dropped out of the England U21 squad earlier this week after suffering a hamstring injury in their 3-1 win over the Czech Republic.
