Organizers hope to broaden AAPI recognition programing in Lexington

The Kentucky Theater is hosting an event Friday in recognition of Lexington’s Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander citizens. One of the organizers hopes to see an expansion of activities next year.

Lexington Vice Mayor Dan Wu said AAPI events in the bluegrass community have, typically, not been widescale. He said that’s the aim and Wu says it begins with the showing of “Everything-Everywhere-All at Once” Friday night at the Kentucky Theater. It will be proceeded with some other activities.

“There’s going to be a Filipino dance troupe. There’s going to be a Tai Kwon Do demo and then there’s going to be a hip-hop performance as well, all by local groups here. So, really excited about it,” said Wu.

Wu said it’s important to note AAPI history and culture including the arts. Wu noted Asian Americans in Lexington and across the U.S. are seen as, quote, “certain types of folks.”

“We’re seen as doctors or engineers or academics or restaurant owners, dry cleaners, right? And I want to break through that and say that we are also in government, we’re in politics, we’re in business, we’re in hip hop,” said Wu.

Wu noted it’s important to show the AAPI culture and history, but not restrict it to heritage. He added that would include all the art activities. The vice mayor hopes to see Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander recognition expand to a month-long event next year.
