Organisers of illegal rave in Banwen, Neath Port Talbot, handed £10,000 fines but party continues

The organisers of a huge rave which brought thousands of people to party in Neath Port Talbot have each been fined £10,000.

Some music equipment has been removed by police while police say they have issued “a number” of orders to seize vehicles which have been used in an anti-social manner.

An estimated 3,000 people were said to have been at the site in Banwen on Sunday with residents reporting people being sick and urinating outside nearby homes.

South Wales Police said they believed people had travelled from all around the UK to attend the event.

In an update on Sunday night the force said two organisers had each been handed fixed penalty notices for £10,000.

Superintendent Jason James said: “We have throughout the day had significant resources at the site and been engaging with the attendees and making every effort to engage with the organisers.

“Events of this kind are illegal and have a significant impact on the community. A number of people have left the site but there are still around a thousand people in attendance and we will continue to have resources at the location throughout the night.

“Those gathering know that their actions are irresponsible and we are working with other agencies and utilising the legislation available to us, including Covid-19 legislation, but we need to ensure that any action taken is done so safely.”

The event comes on the day Wales recorded its steepest rise in new coronavirus cases for at least a week while a plane-load of passengers who flew into Cardiff have all been ordered to self-isolate following seven confirmed cases among passengers.

UPDATE: On the night of Monday, August 31, South Wales Police said they had reported 22 people they believed to be involved in organising the rave for summons. They clarified that the two people they previously said had been issued with fixed penalty notices had not in fact been fined but were among the group that had been reported for summons.
