Organisers call off Sarah Everard vigil for virtual gathering instead

A vigil for Sarah Everard in Liverpool city centre will not now be going ahead, organisers confirmed.

The Reclaim These Streets event at St Luke's, also known as the Bombed Out Church, was due to be held in memory of Ms Everard following her murder, and to highlight the dangers faced by women.

But it was thrown into doubt after Merseyside Police urged people not to attend as such a gathering would contravene lockdown rules.

The main demonstration at Clapham Common in south London - where Ms Everard was last seen alive - was halted after a High Court judge yesterday refused to intervene on behalf of the group, following a legal challenge over the right to gather for a protest during coronavirus restrictions.

Now the organisers of the Liverpool vigil, one of a number planned to take place around the country, have said theirs cannot take place either.

It came on the same day that Wayne Couzens, 48, made his first appearance in court after being charged with kidnapping and killing Ms Everard.

In a Facebook post, a Reclaim These Streets organiser said: "I have been in discussion with Merseyside Police over the last 24 hours to try to work out a way for the Liverpool vigil to go ahead safely and legally.

"I have now been advised by Merseyside Police that tonight's vigil cannot go ahead.

"The intention for this vigil was always for it to be safe, socially distanced, and Covid compliant, in line with the plans of the Clapham group.

"Although this decision is disappointing, the police have assured me they will be happy to facilitate a vigil/protest when it is safe to do so.

"It is because of this that I do not feel tonight's vigil can go ahead as planned and I would strongly encourage people not to gather at the Bombed Out Church.

"Instead, we will be holding a virtual vigil, with details to follow.

"I am also asking everyone to join with the Clapham organisers in a doorstep vigil at 9.30pm, in honour of Sarah Everard and all the women affected by and lost to violence.

"Thank you for your support over the last two days, it is abundantly clear that women's voices will not be silenced.

"Most importantly, I would like to echo the main Reclaim group, in expressing sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Sarah Everard who still remains at the heart of this story."

Both Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council had also urged people not to gather tonight.

Reclaim These Streets Liverpool said they would hold a minute's silence at 6.15pm, alongside the Clapham virtual vigil, in honour of Sarah Everard.
