Why Oregon Will Win
It’s unfortunate how quickly America just blew off Justin Herbert.
He was fantastic against Auburn – hitting 76% of his passes with a touchdown – but the Ducks lost, and Bo Nix became the story. So that’s it … Oregon is done for the year and out of the College Football Playoff chase.
But not really. It can win out and still potentially find its way in, and it can do it as long as Herbert keeps on producing at his current clip.
Has he played up to the hype? 73%, 868 yards, 11 touchdowns, no picks. The Oregon offense is working, and Stanford’s offense really, really isn’t.
The Cardinal attack has fallen flat with no running game and not enough from the downfield passing game to make up for it. The secondary couldn’t handle USC true freshman Kedon Slovis in his first start, and it got its doors blown off by UCF freshman Dillon Gabriel last week.
Stanford hasn’t shown anything over the last two weeks to suggest it can keep up the pace.
Why Stanford Will Win
Stanford has Oregon’s number lately, winning three straight in the series including the 38-31 thriller in Eugene last year thanks to a Ducks’ meltdown.
While he’s been struggling a bit lately after suffering a concussion in the opener against Northwestern, KJ Costello has been terrific over the last two years. Two seasons ago he hit 5-of-6 throws for 59 yards and a touchdown in the blowout, and last year he threw for 327 yards and three scores in the thriller.
He’s got the receivers, and even though the O line has been a disappointment, it’s not all that bad so far in pass protection. The offense has to be able to keep Herbert and the Oregon offense off the field – the Ducks don’t care about the time of possession battle – and make this a brutish, physical game like it did against Northwestern.
Is Stanford in Oregon’s head after last year? Keep this close, and at home this should become an attitude game. Stanford can play a whole lot better than it has over the last two weeks.

What’s Going To Happen
Oregon was cruising along and appeared to have last year’s game won in a laugher, but everything turned on a touchdown that was nullified and a scoop-and-score for the Cardinal on the way to a massive comeback and the overtime win.
It might seem hokey to think about this as revenge game, but …. its a revenge game. Herbert has been too sharp, Oregon has been too good, and even on the road, this will be the game that wakes up the college football world and shows that this really is a team good enough to belong in the discussion of the elite teams – or close to it.
The Stanford offense will get off to a bad start, the Ducks will get up fast, and this time around, they’ll keep the heat on and score more than seven points in the second half.
