Oregon earthquake: 6.4-magnitude tremor strikes off US coast

An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 has struck off the US coast.

The tremor was at a depth of seven miles off the coast of Oregon. No tsunami is expected.

More than 260 people have reported online that they felt the quake, according to Oregon media.

The earthquake was in the Cascadia Subduction Zone area, which is plate boundary which stretches from Vancouver Island in Canada to Northern California.

The quake is thought to have been too far out to sea to cause any structural damage and no injuries have been reported.

The last known great earthquake in the area was in 1700.

The next rupture of the Cascadia Subduction Zone is anticipated to be capable of causing widespread destruction throughout the Pacific Northwest.

In 2009, some geologists predicted a 10% to 14% probability that the Cascadia Subduction Zone will produce an event of magnitude 9.0 or higher in the next 50 years.
