Oregon advances past VCU in NCAA tourney – without playing a game – due to COVID-19 protocols

No. 7 Oregon advanced past No. 10 VCU in the first round of the NCAA tournament after the game was ruled a “no contest” and cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols.

The decision was announced just before 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, around three hours before the scheduled tip for the game, which was scheduled to take place at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

The NCAA issued a statement about its decision, saying it was made “in consultation with the Marion County Public Health Department,” and then went on to say that the organization would not provide any more details due to privacy issues.

It’s a true bummer for VCU players and coaches who worked hard all season to get this shot.

Oregon will face the winner of Iowa – Grand Canyon in the second round on Monday.
