Schools could be reopening as early as June 1 under new government plans.
Last night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the nation to set out new guidance on the country's exit out of lockdown after weeks of restrictions.
Schools and businesses have been closed for weeks in a bid to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus, with the public calling for answers as to when normality may resume.
Though Mr Johnson announced a number of changes to lockdown rules while the coronavirus crisis continues, the Prime Minister's speech has been met with some criticism from the public.
Some of the changes made to current lockdown measures include new rules around parks, exercise and travel, while the Prime Minister said schools could plan reopen with a "phased return" for pupils.
While the PM made clear that it is too early to drastically change the lockdown, he did encourage some people who to start heading back to work from today, May 11.
For schools, the phased plan could see early years, reception, year 1 and year 6 children back in school in smaller classes from June 1.
Secondary schools and colleges should also prepare for face-to-face contact with year 10 and 12 pupils who have GCSE and A-Level exams next year, as the Prime Minister was keen for those facing exams to have some contact with their teachers before the summer break.
The government aims to return all primary school children to school for a month before summer but this will be kept under review.
