Orange walks return to Glasgow with hundreds on the streets after covid ban

Orange walks returned to the streets of Glasgow yesterday after they were banned under lockdown restrictions.

Parades took place across the city with hundreds of people on the streets.

Glasgow City Council gave organisers permission to hold the marches after the city moved to level two restrictions last month.

The Royal Orange Institution Govan District 42, was the largest of the 10 given the go ahead on the first Saturday of July.

Lodges in Bridgeton, Dalmarnock, Parkhead, and Govan were among those also allowed to proceed with their parades.

Just last week an Irish Republican parade was given council approval.

The West of Scotland Band Alliance has registered with Glasgow City Council for a procession through the city on Saturday, July 31..

Around 100 participants are expected to take part, subject to covid restrictions at the time.

Marches and public processions have been cancelled over the last year due to restrictions – but with lockdown rules set to ease to Level 0 from July 19, it could see marches and parades return to the city.

Hundreds are also set to march in the Friends of Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association parade on Saturday September 4, beginning in Blythswood Square and proceeding to George Square.
