Orange Order march cops arrest 14 during Glasgow processions as police chief blasts sectarian chants

Police Scotland have confirmed that 14 people were arrested during Orange Order marches in Glasgow at the weekend.

A number of people were nabbed by cops in connection with alleged anti-social behaviour which included sectarian and racist chants.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland has blasted the small number of procession supporters who were responsible for the comments.

Officers continue to investigate video footage containing ‘hateful singing’ which have been circulating on social media since Saturday.

The Divisional Commander for Glasgow said: “Officers in Glasgow made a total of 14 arrests during the Orange Order processions on Saturday, 18 September, the offences were primarily for public disorder and acts of anti-social behaviour, but also included sectarian related breach of the peace.

“There were outbreaks of racist and sectarian singing by some of those who attended to support the processions, this is utterly unacceptable and we completely condemn this behaviour.

“We are aware of videos circulating that show some of this hateful singing and are already investigating a number of these.

“Our main priority throughout the event was to maintain public safety and ensure minimum disruption to the wider public.”

Over 30 Orange Walks took place across the city on Saturday with an estimated 10,000 people taking part.

We earlier told how a 68-year-old sadly passed away during a procession on Tradeston Street after falling ill.

Grand Orange Lodge Scotland paid tribute saying: "Jim McHarg Grand Master expresses the condolences of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland to the family and friends of Brother John Graham District Secretary Port Glasgow District LOL 19 who sadly passed away yesterday during the Glasgow procession."
