Orange Is the New Black season 7 ending explained: How OITNB ends

All sentences end one way or another.

The final season of Orange Is The New Black has finally been released on Netflix and brings the tales of our favourite characters to an emotional conclusion.

It's been seven glorious years with Piper (Taylor Schilling), Alex ( Laura Prepon ), Red ( Kate Mulgrew ), Taystee (Danielle Brooke), Nicky ( Natasha Lyonne ), and more, but now it's time to say goodbye.

The season focused on multiple storylines including Piper's newfound freedom, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainment centre where multiple characters end up, and the impact of Taystee being found guilty for the murder of Piscatella.

But how does it all end for your favourite characters?

Warning: Spoilers for Orange Is The New Black season 7

Orange Is the New Black season 7 ending explained

Piper and Alex

Alex has a visitor (JoJo Whilden/NETFLIX)

Piper's newfound freedom proves a nail in the coffin of Piper and Alex - for a time.

As Alex languishes in prison, she begins a fling with guard McCullough, while Piper seeks to reassemble her old life of luxury and this is aided with a romance with the wealthy Zelda.

However, both of these new romances fall apart and Alex is moved to a prison in Ohio after McCullough organised the transfer to avoid the awkwardness of their former romance.

Alex speaks with Piper and asks her to move on after she moves further away.

However, the final scene of the series sees Piper visit Alex in Ohio and they share a moment of reconciliation that suggests they do have a romantic future together, with Alex due to be released in a few years.

Taystee

Taystee finds hope (JoJo Whilden/NETFLIX)

Sadly, there is no justice for Taystee as she remains a victim of having been framed for Piscatella's murder and this is not overturned.

Despite initially contemplating suicide to end her suffering, Taystee finds a new reason to live as she embraces being an educator in the prison.

Taystee teaches a GED diploma to inmates without a high school education, including Pennsatucky.

Eventually, all of her students pass their diplomas, restoring her willingness to go on with life in prison.

Taystee also sets up the Poussey Washington Fund which distributes micro-loans to former inmates once leaving life in prison.

Red and Lorna

With the formerly fierce Red having fallen ill with early-onset dementia and Lorna left in a delusional denial after her newborn baby dies of infant pneumonia at home, Nicky is forced to care for the pair.

However, when Red and Lorna are both transferred to B-Block - the prison area for the elderly and mentally ill - they come to lean on each other, with Red still finding the strength to be a support system for the unhappy Lorna.

Nicky

Nicky was separated from her loved ones (Cara Howe/NETFLIX)

The former addict was a support system to surrogate mother Red and friend/lover Lorna, but is eventually separated from them.

Thankfully, Nicky ends up using her compassion in the kitchen of the ICE detention centre by helping detainees contact their loved ones on the outside world.

Suzanne "Crazy Eyes"

Suzanne ends on one of the most hopeful notes in the series, as she finds a period of peace with her mental health.

She is last seen assisting her friend Taystee in helping inmates learn from the Poussey Washington Fund Class.

Pennsatucky

Friends Pennsatucky and Suzanne (NETFLIX)

In one of the most tragic conclusions, Pennsatucky died following an overdose on drugs in the penultimate episode.

Her motive for turning to drugs was her focus on her GED diploma which he believed she had failed.

Her friend Suzanne leads a memorial in her honour in the series finale.

Daya and Aleida

Another dark ending saw Daya continue further down a dark path by murdering Daddy and becoming the new drug kingpin in the prison.

Daya soon clashes with her mother Aleida over dragging her little sister into her schemes.

Eventually, Aleida ends up back in the same prison later in the season and the finale shows the pair come to physical blows, with Aleida choking her daughter and saying she will kill her.

We never see if she does.

Cindy

Cindy went on an emotional journey (Courtesy of NETFLIX)

After betraying Taystee and not confessing the truth of Piscatella's death, Cindy and Taystee never mend their friendship.

Cindy is soon granted early release but finds drama at home when a vengeful Taystee sends a message to Cindy's younger sister revealing the truth that Cindy is her biological mother.

A distraught Cindy flees home and is homeless for a period before eventually finding the courage to return home.

We last see Cindy reconciling with her family.

Blanca

In the most topical storyline of the season, Blanca is held in the ICE detainment centre and fights all season long to regain her freedom.

Eventually, despite her struggles, Blanca gains her green card and can stay in the US as a free woman, but ultimately decides to leave the country for Honduras to be with her deported fiance and they are last seen having an emotional reunion.

Flaca and Maritza

Flaca fought the system for Maritza (Cara Howe/NETFLIX)

The besties were finally reunited but under sad circumstances.

Flaca began working in the ICE detention centre in the kitchen, where Maritza was being detained.

Maritza was helped by her best friend to contact her loved ones, but was eventually deported to Columbia.

Flaca ends the season helping detainees from the kitchen with Nicky.

Maria and Gloria

Gloria finally found freedom (Courtesy of NETFLIX)

The feud between Maria and Gloria continued following Gloria's duplicitous plans to gain her freedom in season 6.

Gloria works in the ICE kitchen too and helps detainees, until she is eventually freed in the season finale.

The pair manage to mend bridges, however, and Maria is seen reading books to her visiting daughter that were given to her by Gloria who used to read them to her own children.

End credits scenes

They aren't really content from the series but over the end credits we see members of the ensemble cast take their bows and say goodbye to the fans.

We'll miss them!
