Orange alert for Mumbai, heavy rains likely for next three days, says IMD

MUMBAI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its district wise forecast for the next five days has issued an orange alert starting today and indicating heavy rains from July 12, Monday, onwards till Wednesday. They have also predicted some extremely heavy rains at isolated places.

However, Saturday saw meager rains. The IMD Colaba observatory recorded 0.2 mm of rains and IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 6.1 mm of rains on Saturday. In the 24-hours ending 8.30am on July 10, the IMD Colaba observatory recorded 20.8 mm of rain and IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 28.4mm of rain.

The IMD officials said this was due to the strengthening of southwesterly winds from the Arabian sea. There could be formation of low pressure over the west, central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on July 11 which could enhance the rainfall. There could be fairly widespread rainfall in the west coast. The heavy rains are likely to continue for the next five days.

“Konkan and Goa may also witness extremely heavy rains during July 11- 14. Parts of ghat areas in state may also receive heavy rains,” said IMD.
