Oran Kearney reveals how Sir Alex Ferguson tactic can inspire St Mirren in relegation fight

Oran Kearney hopes St Mirren fans can be his side's 12th man this weekend just like they were back in the day for Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Buddies take on St Johnstone on Saturday as they attempt to survive the drop as the season comes to a close.

The Paisley side are currently six points clear of Dundee at the foot of the table after their crucial 2-1 win over Livingston.

Sir Alex managed the Saints from 1974-78 and, according to chief executive Tony Fitzpatrick's autobiography, the Manchester United legend regularly roamed the streets of Paisley with a loudspeaker in an attempt to spur on the St Mirren faithful in the lead up to games.

Former Coleraine boss Kearney says he might not replicate Fergie's tactics but says it shows how important a role the home support can play.

He told the Scottish Sun : "I know all about Fergie’s time here as manager as I’ve read Tony’s book.

St Mirren boss Oran Kearney urges Scottish football chiefs to look at NIFL format

"I don’t think we’ll go to those same lengths with the loudhailer! But I do hope the fans come out on Saturday as it’s another massive game for us. We want to get a big crowd behind us and hopefully give them something to shout about.

"The backing we’ve had has been phenomenal. They’ve understood that it’s not going to be plain sailing at times and we might need their patience and their encouragement."

St Mirren have been hit with injuries for the majority of the season but they have started to get players back to full fitness just at the right time.

Kearney added "For maybe the first time since I came in we’ve managed to get everyone out training."
