Optoscribe founder hands over to photonics and chip design veteran

Livingston-based Optoscribe has appointed Russell Childs as its chief executive.

He takes over the role from founder Nick Psaila, who will become CTO to focus on the core technology of the business which makes photonic components for telecoms and data communications customers.

Childs will lead the company’s expansion into mass production of designed-in products for the telecoms and datacenter sectors.

The University of Edinburgh physics graduate previously worked in high-volume manufacturing of semiconductor and optoelectronic devices for companies including Kaiam, part of II-VI Compound Semiconductors in County Durham.

Childs said: “I am looking forward to working with the Optoscribe team to grow the technology base and expand its capability with my experience of working in the semiconductor and photonic devices business over the last 30+ years.

"I am excited about the potential for this technology, particularly now, as the world relies more on optical based technologies for information and communication.”

Psaila added: “I am delighted to welcome Russell to the team. With Russell’s background and expertise, we are now well placed to drive forward our market leading position over the coming months. I look forward to working closely with Russell and am excited for the next phase of growth for Optoscribe.”
