Options for the future of Ashton Court Mansion to be revealed at meeting

It has been a year since Ashton Court Mansion was granted a temporary lifeline and reopened.

The iconic Bristol building was handed over to charity trust Artspace Lifespace (ASLS) in May 2018.

The lease is for five years but ASLS has been working with Bristol City Council and Bristol Civic Society to plan for the future of the Grade I listed property.

The house was previously available for hire for businesses and wedding events, but was closed back in 2017 after Bristol City Council called time on the loss making company which was managing the property.

The mansion is owned and funded by the council’s parks and green spaces budget, but in May last year ASLS stepped in to take on the running of the building while options were being considered for its future.

Since then a major “options” study for the future of Ashton Court Mansion has been carried out by consultants Purcell - and it looks like the results will be revealed later this month.

Bristol Civic Society has published details of a meeting set to take place at City Hall on May 22, which will involve a presentation of the consultant’s options report.

No details about the options have been made public at this point.

The civic society has always said it wants the future of the mansion to be community-based.

A statement on the society’s website said: “We believe that it should be regenerated as a “People’s Palace” for the benefit of all Bristolians.

“It was purchased some 60 years ago by the council and should remain in public ownership and use.”
