Optimistic Liverpool fans tell supporter with unique number plate to 'cash in now'

Optimistic Liverpool fans are urging one supporter to "cash in now" on a unique number plate he bought 13 years ago.

Norman Atherton purchased a licence plate from the DVLA in 2006 for £800 after his club won the Champions League in Istanbul the year before.

The 65-year-old, from Runcorn, said he anticipated that LFC would win the European Cup again that year but instead he had to bide his time.

Now the club have secured their sixth European title , Norman has been instructed to "sell it quick" by hopeful supporters who think the Reds are set for a seventh win in 2020.

Larry Quinn said: "Sell it quick as next year it will be out of date."

Steve Wick also said: "Best sell it quick, won’t be worth as much when we got the magnificent seven...... YNWA"

Others were not so delicate with Norman and made jokes about the plate quickly going "out of date".

Rob Garner said: "Shame the plate will be out of date this time next year. 0007."

Dale Williams also said: "No. It will be irrelevant next year when we win it seven times."

Neil Dowding added: "Pointless gonna need the 007 next year so get your ready for that one."

Now retired, Norman, the former Ford worker said his "ultimate plate" was always intended as an investment to top up his pension, but that it would be a special "buzz" to see it on the LFC team coach.

He said that since June's historic cup triumph in Madrid,  interest in the plate has been ‘ridiculous’  , with people ‘noticing it everywhere’.

Norman said the number six was given added significance by  Jurgen Klopp  singing "Let’s Talk About Six, Baby" – a football version of the Salt ‘N’ Pepper 1991 pop classic – which went viral on social media.

He said: "I had an inkling we would do it again, it took 13 years but we got there eventually.

"My daughter sent me an email saying I would love to see a player with that or Jurgen Klopp – he’s made a big thing about the song Let’s Talk About Six.

"It’s synonymous – the crowd at the cup are going to relive it forever.

"I would love to get the players interested and if the players get interested the sky’s the limit."

After Norman's story and number plate went viral online, almost every commenter was making the same joke.

John Bamford  said: "Wont be any good after next year when they have seven."

Tony Scott added: "Problem is it will be obsolete in a couple of years time. I’m sure Norm will not take offence."

Norman - who said he would have had to sell the plate to have afforded to go to the final - added: "I’ve had it on my cars since 2006.

"I went for a meal in Acton Bridge with my partner, she was outside and someone tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘is that your car? You’ve just bought that’.

"I’ve had it and about a group of 10 people and they were all pointing and looking at it.

"It creates a stir.

"Now’s the time to top up my pension."
