Eye experts have issued a stark warning about novelty contact lens, claiming they could cause serious damage.
The popularity of coloured contacts has skyrocketed in recent years, especially as people dress up in spooky Halloween costumes.
Red, black or white are particularly popular in achieving a scary effect as they cover the pupil, reports Daily Star.
But these freaky contacts can lead to infections and even blindness, warns eye experts.
William Shaw, director of Specsavers in Clydebank, told the Clydebank Post: "If a wearer hasn’t had a proper consultation with an optometrist beforehand, they probably haven’t been taught how to wear or care for their lenses correctly.
“The results can be nasty and range from mildly irritating complications, such as blurry vision and conjunctivitis, to potentially sight-threatening conditions such as fungal infections like microbial keratitis."
But if you are planning to wear novelty coloured contacts, here are some tips to avoid any irritation.
- Avoid cheaper lenses and pay out for some that are of a better quality.
- Don't sleep with your contact lenses in.
- Don't share them with other people.
If you do start to experience any discomfort or pain during or after wearing coloured contact lenses this Halloween, speak with an optician immediately.
If you experience any of the following, visit an opticians:
- Any kind of irritation, ranging from itchiness, soreness or redness.
- The contact lens moves and your vision becomes impaired.
- Headaches or pain in the eye.
- You feel as though the contact is moving around in your eye.
William concluded: "We would strongly advise against wearing cheap contact lenses from the Internet and without a proper prescription, especially if you have never worn contacts before.”
