Oprah Winfrey's mother Vernita Lee dies aged 83

Oprah Winfrey's mother Vernita Lee has died at the age of 83.

A Winfrey spokeswoman on Monday issued a statement saying Lee died at her Milwaukee home on November 22, Thanksgiving. The spokeswoman says private funeral services were held.

No other details were provided.

Lee was a teenager when she gave birth to Winfrey in Mississippi in 1954.

They moved to Milwaukee when Winfrey was 6 years old.

Lee was featured getting a makeover on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 1990.

Lee is also survived by another daughter, Patricia Amanda, and four grandchildren.

Winfrey’s brother Jeffery died in 1989 and her sister Patricia Lee Lloyd died in 2003.

Winfrey’s relationship with her mum was difficult, with the chat show host having described her a “stranger” when she was first sent to live with her after being raised by her maternal grandmother.

She told the OWN: “I suddenly land in a place that’s completely foreign to me. I don’t know anybody. I don’t really even know my mother.

“I walked into that space feeling completely alone and abandoned.”

However, the two repaired their fractured relationship when Winfrey invited Lee onto her successful show for a makeover in 1990.
