Opposites attract fans to new TV show 'Cops 'n' Robbers'

"Sexy thank you!" said Kenichi Endo, who plays a master thief in the new TV show "Doro-kei" (Cops 'n' Robbers), at a preview of the show. Kento Nakajima, who plays his partner, responded, "He stole 'sexy' from me so quickly."

This is a catchphrase of the boy band, Sexy Zone, to which Nakajima belongs. Just like his thieving character Kemuri Garasu, Endo stole the phrase and Nakajima skillfully responded like Madarame, the police detective who partners with him. They drew big laughs from the audience at the preview, including ordinary viewers.

"Cops 'n' Robbers" is broadcast on the Nippon TV network at 10 p.m. every Saturday. Rookie police detective Madarame is assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department's third investigation division in charge of property crimes, but he has trouble adapting to the job.

As he's losing his drive, he happens to meet master thief Kemuri Garasu. They end up cooperating on the investigation of difficult cases.

Nakajima was born in Tokyo on March 13, 1994, and is active as a member of Sexy Zone. Endo was born in Tokyo on June 28, 1961, and has appeared in various films and TV series as an indispensable supporting actor.

Nakajima is a good-looking 24-year-old, while Endo, 57, looks like a tough guy who goes his own way.

The two are opposites in many aspects, including the characters they play, but they both have a strong sense of duty to their fans and mischievous personalities.

"I want to spring various surprises," Nakajima said. So he changed his facial expression during a take so frequently, Endo burst out laughing.

Nakajima and Endo are appearing together for the first time in nine years. However, the actors seem so close, it's hard to believe there was such a long gap.

Even so, at the first shooting, Endo asked Nakajima to join him in in-depth discussions, in addition to camera tests and rehearsals, and they carefully practiced their lines together. They talked a lot about tempos and intervals as a result.

The TV show is based on a popular manga series by Shu Fukuda. In the manga, Madarame is influenced by Kemuri Garasu, but the relationship is changed in the show to one in which the young Madarame worries the meddlesome Kemuri Garasu.

As a result, Nakajima has a heavier burden as a main character, but that has not discouraged him, even though Endo stole his favorite phrase.

"We'll capture your hearts every week!" they said.
