Opportunities at John Lewis - In the week 14/3/11

Retail: John Lewis says it expects to create 4,300 new posts this year, reports Sky News. According to Recruiter the majority of the new roles created by the firm, which takes in both John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, will be based in the UK. A spokeperson told Recruiter that 3,000 of the new jobs would be at Waitrose, with the remainder created at John Lewis.

Technology: Sky has announced plans to create 100 new technology jobs in Scotland. Based in Livingston, the new posts include opportunities for senior technical test analysts, Agile Java developers, technical project managers and developers, according to Computerworld UK. The company said the permanent posts would be for a range of applicants, including junior staff, graduates or experienced IT professionals, reports the BBC.

Aviation: Airline Virgin Atlantic has announced the creation of 450 new jobs. Many of the new positions, which include 350 cabin staff and 50 pilots, will be based at Gatwick airport. The airline also needs 50 staff at airports and its head office, reports Travel Weekly. The launch of a new Manchester to Las Vegas route will create 100 crew jobs in the Manchester area, according to the BBC.

Research: A new £89m technology centre will create hundreds of jobs in Scotland. The Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow will provide the city with 700 new research jobs, according to the Press Association. Construction work will start towards the end of this year, with the building expected to be fully operational by 2013.

Financial services: Galway-based firm Acorn Life has announced it is creating 120 new jobs. The positions will include sales, administration and IT support services, and will be available across its nine offices in Ireland, reports RTÉ News. The financial services company will be specifically looking for experienced business professionals, reports the Irish Times.
