Opinions split as readers react to plans for a Hard Rock Cafe in Newcastle

The news that a Hard Rock Cafe could open in Newcastle is dividing ChronicleLive readers.

A planning application has been submitted by the firm to turn the historic Guildhall building on the Quayside into a rock and roll-themed chain restaurant .

First launched in 1971, Hard Rock International now has outlets in 74 countries, including 183 cafés, 27 hotels and 12 casinos.

While there is plenty of support, some readers have come out against their plan to "vary the layout and style" of the Grade-I listed building.

Charlotte Jane Stück-James said: "What a joke. The Guildhall is a beautiful historic building.

"It’s ridiculous that it’s only been open to scheduled school or university visits for years.

"It should be open for admittance to the public as a historic building even if they charged to cover overheads...️Honestly, a Hard Rock Cafe over a piece of history?!?"

Other readers suggested other city landmarks could have been more suitable.

Mandy Boyd Buchanan suggested the Cooperage , while Paul James Peden said that the old Odeon building would have been an ideal location.

But there was plenty of support for the plan too.

Christopher Holmes: "Nice one. Hope they have bands on like the other branches."

Ann Smith said: "Not before time! Excellent addition to the best city."

Ryan Palmer wrote what quite a few were thinking: "And you thought Five Guys served expensive burgers? Wait till you get a look at Hard Rock’s menu."
