OPINION - Talking Point: Should Harry and Meghan attend the Coronation?

Charles’s Coronation is exactly two months away, and his son Harry is apparently invited to witness it take place at Westminster Abbey.

A spokesperson for Prince Harry said: “I can confirm the duke has recently received email correspondence from His Majesty’s office regarding the Coronation. An immediate decision on whether the duke and duchess will attend will not be disclosed by us at this time.”

Having reportedly been evicted from Frogmore Cottage, the property originally gifted to them by the Queen, after Harry’s memoir Spare was published, the couple may be invited back to it as guests. As it is based in the grounds of Windsor Castle, this would solve the issue of their security provisions in the UK - an issue Harry has raised before.

Royal watchers will await the decision on Harry and Meghan’s RSVP. The expectation, according to Evening Standard writer Anne McElvoy, is that they won’t be able to turn it down: “In this case, the timing of the move and the relatively short notice make something else clear to the Montecito exiles.

“Henceforth, they are welcome to attend the Coronation as family members, but no one will mind if they don’t, nor how volubly angry they may get about it on US networks or streaming services. Neither will there be an olive branch by means of inviting the Sussexes’ children to have a formal role.

“The betting is that they will attend, however fractured the relationship, for fear of A-list FOMO.”
