OPINION - Talking Point: Did the right people win at this year’s Oscars?

There was one big winner at the Oscars 2023 - Everything Everywhere All at Once. The comedy-drama managed to pick up seven awards, including best picture, best director for Daniel Kwan with Daniel Scheinert, and Best Screenplay.

Upon accepting her gong for best actress for the film, Michelle Yeoh made an impassioned speech, saying: “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities.

“And ladies, don’t let anybody tell you that you are ever past your prime.”

It is the first time in Oscars history that the same film has won best picture, best director along with three acting prizes.

Evening Standard culture writer, Charlotte O’Sullivan said that “Everything deserved Everything — and got it”. She noted that “academy voters have overlooked excellence on many occasions. In 2023, they let the right ones win.”
