OPINION - Why I’m not surprised Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got married at Madison Square Garden

If you’ve ever been to a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden there’s one piece of small talk you’ll be practically guaranteed to hear: ‘You know the ice rink is right underneath.’ Conversely, if you’re there watching a bruised twenty-something-year-old New York Rangers player be taken off the ice you’ll hear the opposite: ‘And then they turn it into a basketball court’. When I saw Billy Joel there a few years ago, seated in a crowd of nearly 20,000 during just one evening of his decade-long residency, I did not expect the concert to be such an intimate experience.

This is why I don’t think it’s a crazy place for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce to get married.

Madison Square Garden has long proved itself to be an incredibly versatile venue - it even underwent a $1 billion renovation between 2011 and 2013 all while staying open for business. If any large-scale commercial venue could transform into a beautiful and romantic wedding location, it would be the Garden. And with a decorating budget like Swift’s - who has an estimated net worth of $2.1 billion - the aesthetic possibilities are endless.

There’s also the privacy aspect. In 2023, hundreds of wedding crashers showed up at Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley’s rehearsal dinner with the goal of getting a glimpse of Swift - who was just a guest at the time. With her level of fame and an A-list crowd, an arena with secure, underground tunnels for arrivals, and tight security protocols already in place, sounds incredibly appealing. Images showed workers hanging pink curtains on the inside windows of the stadium so paparazzi shots of guests walking to the bathroom wouldn’t even be possible.

There’s also something poetic to their choice. A massive stadium, home to both music and sport, is deeply symbolic of Swift and Kelce’s union. MSG is the perfect background to represent both of their passions which, given their fame, an open-air football stadium could never be.

Lastly, Madison Square Garden offers a rare commodity that would make the couple’s special weekend memorable for them and their guests: genuine novelty. Plus with 12 inside bars and easy access to a city that never sleeps, the venue could kick off a very fun weekend indeed.

I wish them a very happily ever after.
