OPINION - Has Barbenheimer sparked a cinema revival?: The Leader Podcast

Following the success of Barbenheimer, it looks like the UK cinema industry could be on the brink of a revival.

The dual movie release led to the biggest weekend for UK cinema-going since 2019, and some cinema brands said as many as a fifth of customers saw both in one day.

Between them, Barbie and Oppenheimer generated almost £30 million at the UK box office on the opening weekend.

But their success comes against the backdrop of a struggling cinema sector now dominated by just a few remaining chains.

The Evening Standard’s Chief Film Critic Charlotte O’Sullivan tells The Leader why she thinks the films were so successful, and considers whether their success will spark a comeback for UK cinema.
