OPINION - ‘Good to be home’, says astronaut stuck on ISS for year: Tech and Science Daily podcast

American astronaut Frank Rubio and two Russian cosmonauts are back on terra firma after spending over a year in space.

Their Soyuz MS-23 capsule took three-and-a-half hours to travel down to Earth, making the final part of the ascent by parachute to Kazakhstan.

Nasa’s Rubio and his colleagues, Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin, are six months late home because their original spacecraft sprang a leak, needing a replacement to be sent up for getting them home.

It meant they totalled 371 days aboard the space lab and orbited for nearly 160 million miles.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled his latest vision for the future of the company’s VR hardware - and unveiled plans for virtual AI chatbot friends and digital assistants at its Meta Connect event.

There was also the latest iteration of the tech giant’s camera-equipped Ray-Ban smart glasses and Quest 3 mixed reality goggles - plus what you might see within its virtual confines, including Instagram posts as wall framed wall art.

British scientists are planning to build the world’s most powerful laser, which they claim would be able to produce a beam many millions of billions of times more powerful than the sun’s rays.

The £85 million Vulcan 20-20 laser will be made at the Science and Technology Facilities Council Central Laser Facility in Oxfordshire .
