Operation to crackdown on prostition

Like other areas in Cardiff, Grangetown is plagued by the daily annoyances caused by parking, fly tipping, and anti-social behaviour.

But the patch is also prone to prostitution around Taffs Mead Embankment and Penarth Road. Police at last night's partnerships and communities together meeting informed residents worried about curb crawlers and prostitutes in Grangetown they were continuing a force wide operation to target problem spots.

Residents were told by new PCSO for Grangetown, Candice Bees, about Operation Cooper - a crackdown on the red light district. Ten street cautions have been issued to prostitutes and warning letters sent to curb crawlers.

Community policing sergeant Adrian Snook said: "We are trying to break the cycle of this by putting them in touch with various different agencies prior to being arrested. It's not a problem which will be solved overnight but we are making progress.

"Prostitution has gone down in the area over the last couple of years but as the evenings get lighter people notice it more. It's a prevalent problem in Roath too and we're working with teams in Cardiff Bay, Roath and Cathays."

Residents also complained of parking, and a new housing development on the old laundry site on the corner of Pendyris Street and Mardy Street. Residents were worried the new flats would not have proper parking provision. Councillor David Morgan for Grangetown said he hoped when the council take over parking enforcement in June, there will be a fresh approach to the problem.

"I'm hoping we will move from a piecemeal approach to a something more holistic," he said. "The only way to do it is to say there can be only a certain amount of cars in the city. The scheme I would like is the London idea of the red line – where if cars stop there they are toed away."

Recently double yellow lines have been introduced on Penarth Road. Police at yesterday's meeting said they had issued 83 fixed penalty notices since the last pact meeting. See the total number of tickets issued in Grangetown in our parking data post here.

Prostitution, parking and poor road conditions were set as pact priorities for the police and council to tackle over the next month.

The next pact meeting for Grangetown will take place on Tuesday 25 May at the Channel View leisure centre. The Butetown pact meeting will be held tonight at 7pm at the Butetown police station.

Residents around Grange gardens were also encouraged to attend a Neighbourhood watch meeting on 27 April at the conservative club. The Lower Grange Partnership scheduled for tonight has also been moved to next Wednesday 21 April.
