Opera singer pleads guilty to sexually assaulting chorus child

Former Opera Australia tenor David Edward Lewis has pleaded guilty to historic child sex offences for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old chorus girl, his lawyer has told a court.

David Edward Lewis was in his 30s when he repeatedly assaulted the girl between 1993 and 1995.

The 59-year-old was charged in July with two counts of sexual intercourse with a person under 16, three counts of aggravated indecent assault and one count of committing an act of indecency.

Mr Lewis appeared at Sydney Local Court for the hearing, where his lawyer Chadi Irani said the entertainer would plead guilty to the charges.

The tenor was stood down from Opera Australia after the allegations against him surfaced last year.

Mr Lewis had been a longstanding member of Opera Australia, performing as the Emperor in the performance of Turandot on Sydney Harbour in 2016.

In 2017, he performed as the character Pedro in Opera Australia's production of Two Weddings, One Bride.

He remains on bail and the matter will return to court later this month.
