Opera singer reflects on "unbelievable experience" at Windsor Park

British-Italian soprano Carly Paoli has revealed her pride at performing at Windsor Park.

Carly sang both the Italian and Northern Ireland national anthems ahead of Monday's World Cup qualifier in Belfast.

She donned a blue cloak to belt out a superb rendition of 'Fratelli d'Italia', or 'Il Canto degli Italiani' to give it its original name.

Carly then endeared herself to the Green and White Army by ditching the cloak for a full Northern Ireland kit before singing 'God Save The Queen'.

The rousing performance generated an electric atmosphere at Windsor, and it seemed to inspire Northern Ireland to a brilliant 0-0 draw against the European champions.

Reflecting on the experience, Carly said on Twitter: "This was the most unbelievable experience. To get to sing both anthems and to perform to a packed passionate crowd is something I will never forget. Thank you to @dcsoccer88, #NorthernIreland and @Azzurri."

The classically-trained singer told Sky Sports how she got the Windsor gig.

She said: "One of my dearest friends is David Campbell who played for Northern Ireland, and also played for Northern Ireland in the World Cup.

"We have been friends for a really long time, and with his wife Lorraine they are the most dynamic couple.

"It was their suggestion, with my unique story of being British and Italian, that I would perhaps fit the bill for this extraordinary match.

"And I am so honoured, and it feels like a huge privilege to be here."
