Opera singer charged with child sex offences against 14yo chorus girl

Opera singer David Lewis has been charged with historic child sex offences involving a teenage chorus girl dating back to the 1990s.

The alleged victim was a then 14-year old girl from the children's chorus of a performance, New South Wales police said.

Mr Lewis, aged 58, had been a longstanding member of Opera Australia, performing as the Emperor in the performance of Turandot on Sydney Harbour in 2016.

Earlier this year, he performed as the character Pedro in Opera Australia's production of Two Weddings, One Bride.

A police spokesman said Mr Lewis was charged in July with six offences, including one count of aggravated indecent assault of a victim under the age of 16 years and sexual intercourse with a 14 to 16-year-old.

Opera Australia chief executive Rory Jeffes said the organisation had cooperated with police when they approached the company and acted when made aware of the allegations in July.

"Due to the nature of the charges Opera Australia took immediate action to stand David Lewis down and require that he stay away from the workplace," he said in a statement.

"He has not participated in any company activity since then and he is no longer an employee of Opera Australia."

Opera Australia 'deeply upset'

"There is no record of any allegations of this nature against David Lewis being reported to Opera Australia," Mr Jeffes said.

"If any member of the Opera Australia community has concerns or knowledge of any activities which could be deemed inappropriate they are urged to speak with their manager, the HR manager or myself."

He said Opera Australia "takes this matter extremely seriously" and that it was "deeply upsetting to everyone involved in Opera Australia".

The company has zero tolerance to bullying, discrimination and harassment in the workplace, Mr Jeffes said.

Mr Lewis was granted bail in July and the matter has been listed for mention on December 5 in Sydney's Downing Centre.
